El Dorado, New Mexico

1,272 square feet

Tucked into a gentle drainage plane in El Dorado, just outside Santa Fe, this 1,200 sq. ft. home was crafted for a single occupant and their dog. Simplicity drove the design—but working within strict HOA guidelines posed a creative challenge. The result is a home that honors Northern New Mexico’s architectural vernacular while reflecting the unique needs of its owner. Classic elements like exposed beams nod to traditional vigas, though here they serve a fully functional purpose. Custom shadow boxes on the southern façade not only shade the interior from summer sun but add striking geometry to an otherwise flat wall. Inside, smart design choices maximize space and flow. A bold decision to remove the master bedroom door made room for a compact hallway that doubles as storage and provides seamless access to the bathroom. This home proves that with precision and creativity, even modest square footage and design constraints can yield beautiful, highly functional living.
