  ou will come to appreciate the skill of a good designer when you think about how many criteria must be addressed to realize the goal. Often these criteria come with competing priorities. It's not difficult to satisfy a few important criteria in the design of a home, but it takes an experienced professional to balance and juggle all the criteria necessary for a successful custom home design. Adding the "green" criterion to the formula adds yet another dimension.
DESIGN CRITERIA
Every Sunlight home is designed to satisfy three criteria:
• your design needs
• your land and climate
• your building budget
To meet our standards, the home must also be comfortably liveable and functional and the spaces must work for the people and the activities that will take place there. The plan should flow logically from room to room and from inside to out. It should have proper solar orientation for the specific climate and logical orientation to the street access. It must consider the prevailing winds, and the views and it must reduce the impact of visual obstructions. It must be structurally sound, highly energy efficient and environmentally sensitive. The home should achieve all of this, be aesthetically pleasing inside and out, AND it must fit the budget.
DESIGNING FROM A DISTANCE
 We have been designing custom homes remotely for many years, and in doing so have created a system that is efficient and very successful. Today, with the Internet and advanced communication systems, distance is no longer an issue. In fact, the vast majority of our clients live and build in locations that are quite a distance from our location in New Mexico.
THE SITE VISIT
The first design meeting always takes place at the building site; wherever that may be. This is the best way for us to understand first hand the nuances of your particular building site. Our Site Visit occurs soon after you become a client and after you have completed our PreDesign Worksheets that are provided in our client web site, the Inner Sanctum. The Site Visit is a 2 day event that takes place at your building site (and at a comfortable spot nearby where we discuss the worksheets and brainstorm ideas) and by the end of the two days, the seed of your new home design has been sprouted! |
