tructural insulated panels filled with polyurethane, rather than the more common polystyrene, are the foundation of every Sunlight Homes component package. They offer insulation ratings higher per inch than any other insulating material—rated at R-33 in the walls and R-40 in the roof. When the wall and roof finish materials are added, the composite R-values are R-37 (walls) and R-42 (roof).
STRUCTURAL INSULATED PANELS (SIPs)
Sunlight Homes provides a super- insulated, panelized exterior wall and roof system, custom fabricated for your custom design. The structural insulated panels (SIPs) have twice the insulation value of conventional construction and are much stronger. This building system is a higher-quality product than frame structures in every respect.
QUALIFIED BUILDERS
Any competent builder can assemble a SIP panelized home. In fact, instead of trying to find a local builder experienced with panels, we suggest that our customers find a builder they like and trust. We can give the builder information s/he needs to successfully build a SIP panel home. The learning curve, fortunately, is not steep since, in effect, the builder is using a partially preassembled material instead of assembling all of the individual pieces at the job site, as with a frame home.
We recommend that you select a professional contractor to build your Sunlight home. You will find some builders who are interested in building with panels and others who aren't. We will give builders the information needed for a successful project. Most of our builders have never built a panel home before and invariably do just fine. It is different than building a frame home, but in many ways easier since there are far fewer parts, and any frame builder will catch on to panel construction quickly.
OWNER BUILDERS
If you plan to build your home yourself, you'll enjoy the benefits of a kit home for your project. Your structure will be less complicated than a frame home because there are fewer pieces, and building with panels is like erecting a giant jigsaw puzzle. We've worked with many owner-builders over the years and they report that building a panel home was a great choice. Of course, we strongly recommend that you tackle a project such as this only if you have plenty of experience and time....and if you are of the right temperament! See our OWNER BUILDING section for more information.
