K, so after all of this negative owner builder talk, you're still committed to building your own home, eh? Well, our approach and systems could be helpful to you. Here's how:
CUSTOM DESIGN SERVICE
When we design homes for owner builders, we first assess your skills, and then determine what level of involvement you plan to have in the construction process. In design we put special effort into creating a home that will be a successful owner builder project and add detail drawings to make the construction process as clear to the nonprofessional as possible. Many times, custom homes are designed by people who don't have actual construction experience. This often leads to futsy details that require extra skill in the field to overcome successfully. Since we have also built our homes, many of these problems are eliminated, but we give special attention to our owner builder projects, so that the construction process has the best chance of being predictable. We need your help during the design process too, however. When we say that your design ideas are possible but will make the construction more difficult, opt for the more simple design detail! Working together will give you more chance for success.
SYSTEMS IN CONSTRUCTION
When you begin with our Component Package you get a lot more than a design and a load of materials! You get a proven, thought-out system for building your home; one that includes instruction, support and guidance. Included with your Sunlight package is instruction for you or your subcontractor so that the panelized shell can be erected efficiently. You can expect a learning curve if you are inexperienced with panelized construction, but the curve isn't severe. Most of our projects are built by contractors who haven't ever built a panel home before.
In addition, our construction documents will assist you in beginning your project intelligently, by using our comprehensive contracts with those you hire, inspection checklists to assist you in overseeing your project, and construction sequencing documents to help schedule subcontractors. Owner builders with long distance projects (from our home office in New Mexico) have the advantage of a toll-free support line during construction. This is helpful and convenient for quick answers to questions that unexpectedly arise.
